One family at the long table, snow to the windows and the northern lights overhead. For Christmas and New Year 2026, Alten Lodge in Alta, Norway takes one group each week, up to 30 of you, with the whole lodge to yourselves. When a week is taken, it is gone.

Picture the week. Fifteen minutes from Alta airport the road climbs to a hilltop with no neighbours, and the children are in the snow before the bags are unpacked. Dinner happens at one long table. The sauna is always warm. The outdoor hot tub steams under a black sky that can tear open with green light at any dark hour, because in the polar night the aurora does not wait for midnight.
Alten Lodge sleeps up to 30 across nine ensuite rooms and three family cabins, so grandparents, cousins and old friends fit under one roof. It is self-catering with backup. Our concierge can fill the fridge before you land, book tables in Alta or send a private chef for the evenings that matter.

No crowded venue, no queue for a table and no taxi home. Dinner at the long table, the hot tub under the open sky and, if the night is clear, the northern lights overhead at midnight. 2027 is said to be a strong year for the aurora, and the polar night gives it every dark hour to appear. A private chef can carry the whole evening while you watch the sky.

Which weeks are available?
Two. Christmas runs from 19 to 26 December 2026, seven nights. New Year runs from 27 December 2026 to 2 January 2027, six nights. One group takes the whole lodge each week, up to 30 guests, and when a week is reserved it comes off this page.
Is the stay self-catering?
Yes, and that is the point. The lodge has a big kitchen and a dining hall with one long table, so Christmas tastes like your family, not a hotel menu. Our concierge can arrange grocery delivery before you arrive, book restaurants in Alta or send a private chef for the evenings that matter, at extra cost.
What is there to do over Christmas in Alta?
Snowmobiles delivered to the door, husky sledding, whale watching on the fjord, reindeer and Sámi culture, and the northern lights after dark. Every activity is optional, and we book them around your group. Wildlife and the lights depend on the weather, so we plan with that in mind.
