Why this one

Luxury safari,
your hands on the wheel.

Most safaris put a guide at the wheel. This one gives you the keys.

Ten days across Uganda in your own 4x4, with a convoy around you and every detail arranged: lodges, meals, park fees, wildlife guides and gorilla permits. It is one of the few self-drive gorilla trekking safaris anywhere, and places close early.

The shape of it

Entebbe to
Entebbe.

We have done the Atlantic Road, the Alps and the Adriatic. This time we do Africa.

The trip starts gently. On day two you drive north to Ziwa, leave the car, and track white rhino on foot with a ranger. From there the road leads to Murchison Falls, where the Nile squeezes through a gap seven metres wide and drops 43 metres. You stand right above it. The next morning brings a game drive across the northern plains, then an afternoon on the river, cruising to the foot of the falls past elephant, hippo and crocodile.

Then you turn west to Queen Elizabeth National Park. An early drive across the Kasenyi Plains for lion and Uganda kob, and a boat along the Kazinga Channel, home to one of the densest hippo populations on earth. On the road south you pick and roast coffee where it grows, and spend an afternoon with a local community before the drive to Bwindi.

Bwindi is the morning the whole trip is built around. You walk into the Impenetrable Forest until the trackers find the gorilla family. Then you get one hour on the forest floor, a few metres from a silverback who has decided to tolerate you. Afterwards, Lake Bunyonyi gives you a day to sit still. The Equator marks the road home.

Included: all accommodation, one 4x4 for the full tour, all meals, soft drinks, park fees and wildlife guides. Fly in and out of Entebbe International [EBB]. You bring yourself. We bring the rest.

Gorilla permits are limited and allocated well in advance, so this one closes early.

The loop: Kampala, Murchison, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi, Bunyonyi.
